Quick answer: The £100 Household Energy Payment, announced in the Autumn Budget on 28 October 2026, goes to homes in council tax bands A to D in England, from January 2027. That is up to 20 million households. No application has been announced. Homes in bands E to H are not covered automatically, and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will set out their own support.
The payment is part of a wider package covered in full in our Autumn Budget 2026 energy bills guide, which also explains the gas standing charge changes, the electricity VAT cut and the January price cap forecast.
Who qualifies for the £100 energy payment?
| Your situation | Qualifies? |
|---|---|
| Home in England, council tax bands A to D | Yes, expected from January 2027 |
| Home in England, council tax bands E to H | Not automatically. Councils share an extra £100 million for households in need, including some in higher bands |
| Home in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland | Not under this scheme. Each government receives funding and will announce its own plans |
Around 81% of homes in England sit in bands A to D, which is about 20.8 million of the 25.8 million properties on the list in March 2025, according to Valuation Office Agency statistics. The Treasury figure of up to 20 million households is consistent with that.
Council tax bands A to H explained
In England, a home’s band depends on what it would have sold for on 1 April 1991, not on what it is worth today. That is why neighbouring houses can sit in different bands, and why a postcode alone cannot show a band.
| Band | Value on 1 April 1991 (England) | £100 payment |
|---|---|---|
| A | Up to £40,000 | Expected |
| B | £40,001 to £52,000 | Expected |
| C | £52,001 to £68,000 | Expected |
| D | £68,001 to £88,000 | Expected |
| E | £88,001 to £120,000 | Not automatic |
| F | £120,001 to £160,000 | Not automatic |
| G | £160,001 to £320,000 | Not automatic |
| H | Over £320,000 | Not automatic |

- Your council can confirm the band by phone or online.
When and how will the £100 be paid?
The Budget says the payment starts in January 2027. Reports on Budget day differ on the delivery method: some describe payment directly into bank accounts, while another analysis says councils will deliver it through the council tax system. Either way, councils are involved, so the exact date and method depend on where you live. Check your council’s website from January.
Details such as who in a household receives the payment, including for renters, had not been published in the coverage reviewed on Budget day. This page will be updated as councils and government confirm them.
Beware of scams
Announcements of payments like this attract scam texts, emails and calls. A genuine payment is arranged through your council’s own website and systems. Do not click a link in a message asking you to “claim” it, and do not give bank details to anyone who contacts you unprompted. If in doubt, find your council’s official website yourself and check there.
Will the £100 cut my energy bill?
The payment does not change your tariff or unit rates, so your bill is calculated as before. It is a separate one-off payment worth about 6% of a typical annual bill at the current price cap of £1,723. Cornwall Insight forecasts the January 2027 cap at about £1,999, so the payment covers only part of the expected rise. See what the energy price cap is and how it works and use the heating cost calculator to estimate what a rise means for your home.
